What a busy and exhausting day we had in Roma. We got up and had our little breakfast at our hotel. Wow, does it ever not even come close to the delicious breakfast meals we had in Umbria. I figure I can have something (which is better than nothing) for free or go out and pay for another meal. It was fine for today though.
Our first stop today was to hit the collosseo, the forum and Palatino Hill in the morning. We had read a travel book that said it was best to go to the vatican in the afternoon when it wasn't as crowded. First off, I do not think there is a time when it is not busy. The morning was so HOT but we did the area we were hoping to. We then decided to go to the Piazza Venezia and see the Altar of the Nations. What amazing architecture. It was a very large building and was nice to see in person. I have seen it in many movies and TV shows.
We then decided to head back in the direction of our hotel so we could see the Vatican. We ran into the patheon on our way so we decided to take a look. I have to say that I didn't know a lot about the Pantheon and for some reason thought that it was just an old building. I didn't know that it was so well kept and that it was a church. I learned something new today. I really enjoyed seeing the Pantheon. It is a very beautiful place. Onward to the Vatican.
I probably should tell you at this point we had been on the go since about 8:30 in the hot sun and hot weather. I felt so exhausted and sun baked. I was having flashbacks from when I lived in Phoenix. That is how hot it felt to me.
We made it to the Vatican only to find the lines are NOT any better in the afternoon. We also found out that tomorrow is a holiday so the Vatican will not be open. That will now be on our to do list for early Thursday morning. We decided it would be best just to have some lunch and then head back to our hotel for a little cooling off and a short nap.
There were caffes all over and we hit one that looked like it had some good business but still had room for us. We opted to sit inside to get out of the sun and the heat. It was too cute when we sat down at the table. The husband sat us down and gave us a menu. Next thing we know the wife is shouting, “prego, prego. Pizze or pasta?” So we had to pretty much order on the fly. I ordered a vegetarian pizza. Hoping that she really understood the meaning of vegetarian. She made a good little pizza. I was just so happy to be inside. We sat for awhile before hitting the sun for our walk back to our home base.
Once I got to the room I threw shorts on and saw that my feet were sunburned and I was a big sweaty mess. I washed out some clothes since I have no idea where a laundry is located. We will see what happens with that.
Tomorrow we are going to the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. I am sure we will do more than that, but nothing is planned out as of yet. I need to see if we can get into the Borghese museum. It says we need reservations. If we don't get them then that is one place we will not see on this trip.
Mark and I are both very exhausted. I am looking forward to heading out in a bit for a cold drink and a little people watching.
More to come........
